What is World Space Week?

World Space Week is officially defined as “an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition.”

Held annually from 4th to 10th October, the week highlights humanity’s achievements and advances in space science. It promotes the importance of space exploration and the vital role science and technology play in improving life on Earth.

By educating the public about space science and its impact on society, World Space Week aims to:

  • Raise awareness about the benefits of space.
  • Inspire interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
  • Support space exploration as a driver of sustainable development.

Coordinated by the United Nations, with support from the World Space Week Association, the event is celebrated in more than 80 countries through thousands of events and initiatives.

When is World Space Week?

World Space Week is observed every year from 4th to 10th October, marking two key milestones in space history:

  • October 4, 1957: The launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite.
  • October 10, 1967: The signing of the Outer Space Treaty, laying the foundation for responsible international cooperation in space.

2025 Theme: “Living in Space”

This year’s theme focuses on sustainable space exploration, the future of human habitation beyond Earth, and how innovations in space can benefit life on our planet.

What Happens During World Space Week?

Across the globe, a wide range of events take place to celebrate World Space Week, including:
